Instructor Spotlight – David Powers

Posted by Faculty of Open Learning & Career Development on June 19, 2025 in News

With the rapid changes in today's workplace, one constant necessity that may get overlooked is occupational health and safety. Overlooking or neglecting this important topic can be very costly and tragic. ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½'s Faculty of Open Learning & Career Development is grateful to have David Powers as one of our instructors. He teaches our Incident Prevention and Investigation, which is offered every winter. Let's get to know him in this edition of our Instructor Spotlight series.

1) How long have you been in the field of Occupational Health & Safety (OHS)?

I have been actively involved in the field OHS for the past 33 years.  Along  with some freelance consulting, I’m currently the Corporate Safety Manager for J.D. Irving, Limited. I’ve held similar positions with the New Brunswick Department of Education & Early Childhood Development, Sysco Canada, Inc., Oxford Frozen Foods, Limited, and Magna Powertrain.

2) What has been the biggest change in your field in recent years?

The biggest change has been the use of technology as it applies to training. We've gone from using acetates and overheads to online and cloud-based programs. It’s very impressive.

3) What’s the most surprising thing we might see on your resume/cv?

Actually, it's what’s not on my current CV. Before entering the field of OHS, I worked as a videographer on a cruise ship.

4) How do you unwind?

I greatly enjoy just spending time with family and friends. I've also picked up crossword puzzles in the past few years. I’m hoping it will help to keep me sharp!

5) What's the best aspect of teaching with the Faculty?

It’s so gratifying to interact with both students and staff! Collectively, they are the most amazing group of people to work with!
