Kannan Ramaswamy is the William D. Hacker Chair Professor of Management in global business at Thunderbird School of Global Management. He is world-renowned for his expertise on global strategy, emerging markets 鈥 including India and South Asia, the energy sector, corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, and global management. A native of India who is now a U.S. citizen, Ramaswamy has consulted for several U.S. and European multinationals. He is an award-winning executive educator whose teaching and research interests span emerging market multinationals, business groups and corporate diversification, mergers and acquisitions, privatization, and joint ventures.

In addition to teaching in Thunderbird鈥檚 full-time programs, Ramaswamy teaches extensively in the school鈥檚 executive education programs. He has participated in programs with multinational companies including American Express, EDS Corp. (now part of Hewlett-Packard Co.), Dow Chemical, General Motors, Mattel, Brasil Telecom, Delta Air Lines, Astellas Pharmaceutical (Japan), LG Electronics (Korea), Ericsson, Motorola, ExxonMobil, Baker Hughes, ONGC (India), Integra (Russia), and SK Corp. (Korea). Ramaswamy also directs several Thunderbird programs including the program on Globalization: Merging Strategy with Action that deals with global strategy issues, and the Advanced Management Program for Oil and Gas Industry Executives dealing with contemporary issues in oil and gas.

Ramaswamy鈥檚 research 鈥 which has appeared in distinguished journals including Strategic Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, Academy of Management Journal, Management International Review, Journal of Management and Journal of Business Research 鈥 focuses on a broad range of topics: challenges facing emerging market multinationals, the performance impact of corporate diversification; competitive consequences of privatization; the role of strategic fit in mergers and acquisitions; and equity vs. operational-control issues in joint ventures. Much of his recent research in these areas has centered on emerging markets. Ramaswamy鈥檚 work has been featured among the best papers at these prestigious national meetings eight times; his work was chosen 鈥渂est paper鈥 twice at the Academy of Management national meetings. As a faculty member at the academic institutions he has served, Ramaswamy has won numerous awards for research excellence.

A member of the Board of Reviewers of the Journal of International Business Studies and the editorial board of the Journal of International Management, and the Asia Pacific Journal of Management, Dr. Ramaswamy has also served as guest editor of a special issue of the Journal of Operations Management on 鈥渒nowledge offshoring.鈥 With Thunderbird professor Andrew Inkpen, Ramaswamy co-authored the book Global Strategy: Creating and Sustaining Advantage across Borders published by the Oxford University Press.

Landry Sign茅 is a David M. Rubenstein Fellow in the Global Economy and Development Program at the Brookings Institution. He joins the Africa Growth Initiative where his research focuses on the political economy of growth, sustainable development, governance, fragile and failed states, regional integration, and business in Africa.

Professor Sign茅 is a distinguished fellow at Stanford University鈥檚 Center for African Studies, chairman of the Global Network for Africa鈥檚 Prosperity, an Andrew Carnegie Fellow, a 2016 Woodrow Wilson Public Policy Fellow, and a professor and senior adviser on international affairs to the chancellor at the University of Alaska Anchorage. He serves as special adviser to world leaders on international and African affairs.

Professor Sign茅 has been recognized as a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader for 鈥渇inding innovative solutions to some of the world鈥檚 most pressing issues鈥 and as a Tutu Fellow. Previously, Professor Sign茅 served as president of a strategy firm and as a visiting scholar at the University of Oxford. He also served on the board of AMPION Catalyst for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Africa, Citizens Governance Initiative, and the United Nations Association of Canada鈥揗ontreal, and was appointed by a United Nations Undersecretary-General to serve on the Global Network on Digital Technologies for Sustainable Urbanization.

Professor Sign茅 has authored many academic and policy publications focused on Africa, the global political economy, the politics of economic reform and foreign aid, emerging and frontier markets, institutional change, political regimes, state capacity, service delivery, and governance. Among those publications are "Innovating Development Strategies in Africa: The Role of International, Regional and National Actors" and the forthcoming "African Development, African Transformation: How Institutions Shape Development Strategy," both published by Cambridge University Press. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Harvard International Review.

Professor Sign茅 holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science as well as a master's in Political Science from Jean Moulin Lyon III University, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Montreal. Additionally, he attended Stanford University for Postdoctoral Studies in Political Science, attended the Executive Program in Leadership at the University of Oxford, and studied Global Leadership and Public Policy for the 21st Century at Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education.

Sanjeev Khagram is a world-renowned scholar and practitioner in the areas of globalization, transnationalism, leadership, strategic management, entrepreneurship, social enterprise, cross-sector innovation, public-private partnerships, inter-organizational networks, good governance, transparency, the global political economy, sustainable development, human security, and the data revolution. He holds a bachelor's in development studies and engineering, a master's degree and doctoral degree minor in economics and doctorate in political economy, all from Stanford University.

Professor Khagram most recently led the establishment of the cross-sectoral Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data and International Open Data Charter. He also previously founded and was the architect of the multi-stakeholder Global Initiative for Fiscal Transparency (GIFT). Khagram was selected as a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum and authored UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon鈥檚 Report on the Impacts of the Global Economic Crisis in 2009. He was dean of the Desmond Tutu Peace Centre, Foundation and Trust from 2003-2005, and he was Senior Policy and Strategy Director at the World Commission on Dams where he was the lead writer of the Commission鈥檚 widely acclaimed Final Report from 1998-2000. Khagram also founded and led Innovations for Scaling Impact 鈥 a global enterprise from 2007-2012.

Khagram was the John Parke Young Professor of Global Political Economy, Diplomacy and World Affairs at Occidental College from 2012鈥18. He was previously a Professor and the Founding Director of the Center for International Development at the University of Washington. From 2008鈥10, he held the Wyss Visiting Professorship at the Harvard Business School. Khagram was an Associate (and Assistant) Professor at Harvard University鈥檚 JFK School of Government and Visiting Professor at Stanford University鈥檚 Institute of International Studies between 1998鈥2005. He has also taught in numerous universities around the world including the Monterrey Institute of Technology (Mexico), Tata Institute of Social Sciences (India), Lee Kwan Yew School of Public Policy (Singapore), University of Cape Town (South Africa), University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), and Central European University (Hungary).

He has lived and worked for extended periods in Brazil, India, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, Thailand, Germany and the United Kingdom. Khagram is of Asian Indian heritage, a Hindu, and a refugee from Idi Amin鈥檚 Uganda, which brought him to the United States in 1973 via refugee camps in Italy.  He is the proud father of two sons.

Mark Stapp, EEd

Mark Stapp has been involved in planning, investing in, developing, and consulting on real estate for more than 30 years, with a focus on sustainable development. Stapp is the Fred E. Taylor Professor in Real Estate at the W. P. Carey School of Business, and Director of the Master of Real Estate Development program. In addition to his appointments within the W. P. Carey School, Stapp is a faculty associate in the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. Stapp is also the managing member of the investment and development firm Pyramid Community Developers, LLC, and president of U.S. operations for the Swiss investment company Naef International Management since 1995.

Dr. Roland Kupers is an advisor on Complexity, Resilience and Energy Transition, as well as a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Amsterdam and a Professor of Practice at the Thunderbird School of Global Management at ASU.

A theoretical physicist by university training, Roland spent the first 11 years of his career with AT&T in the Netherlands and in Italy, holding different business management positions. His last assignment there was as Regional Managing Director for Northern Europe.

After AT&T, Roland spent a sabbatical year looking at new developments in understanding the dynamics of organizations, as well as publishing and lecturing on the topic of complex systems.

From 1999 to 2010 he joined Royal Dutch Shell in various senior executive functions, including Vice President for Sustainable Development and Vice President Global LNG. He was closely involved with strategy and scenario planning.

He has published widely, including in HBR, on Project Syndicate and co-authored The Essence of Scenarios 鈥 Learning from the Shell Experience (with A. Wilkinson 鈥 Amsterdam 2014), Complexity and the Art of Public Policy (with D. Colander 鈥 Princeton 2014) and A Climate Policy Revolution (Harvard 2020). Roland was a co-author of a report commissioned by the German Government on a New Growth Path for Europe. In 2013 he was the Director for the inception phase of the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate.

Roland is a Dutch national; his travels have made him fluent in five languages.

Ariane Middel

Ariane Middel is an urban climatologist whose work has greatly advanced scientists’ understanding of the effects of urban heat islands. She is currently focused on developing better models and metrics to quantify urban heatscapes using tools like MaRTy, a biometeorological robot designed to measure extreme temperatures and how the body reacts to heat. MaRTy stands for mean radiant temperature. The robot was used in one of Middel’s latest studies on ASU’s Tempe campus where her team measured the best landscape designs to keep people cool. Middel is an assistant professor in both the School of Geographical Science and Urban Planning and the School of Arts, Media and Engineering. She is also a member of the Urban Climate Research Center and the Central Arizona–Phoenix Long-Term Ecological Research program at ASU. She is currently serving a 4-year term (2016-2020) on the Board of the International Association of Urban Climate and is also a member of the American Meteorological Society, the International Society of Biometeorology and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Scott J. Shackelford is Cybersecurity Program chair at Indiana University, director of the Ostrom Workshop Program on Cybersecurity and Internet Governance, and professor of business law and ethics at the IU Kelley School of Business. He is a senior fellow at IU's Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research, academic director of the IU Cybersecurity Clinic and a term member at the Council on Foreign Relations. Shackelford is also an affiliated scholar at both the Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs and Stanford's Center for Internet and Society. Nicole Ngo is an academic expert in public health, the impact of climate change on health, environmental policy and urban sustainability. At the University of Oregon, Nicole is an associate professor in the School of Planning, Public Policy and Management. Nicole鈥檚 research focuses on public health and transportation. Previous projects include evaluating the effects of vehicle emission standards on air pollution and health, measuring urban air pollution in sub-Saharan Africa, and examining the effects of climate change on health and transportation choices. 

Haris Alibasic, Ph.D.

Dr. Haris Alibaši膰 is an Associate Professor and the Public Administration Program Coordinator at the University of West Florida. Dr. Alibaši膰 brings 27 years of expertise and experience in the public sector, including working for the United Nations Mission, NATO, and the Office of High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina and SouthEast Europe. In Grand Rapids, he directed energy, sustainability, legislative affairs, and climate resilience policies and programs for Grand Rapids, the second-largest city in Michigan. He implemented resilience strategies resulting in significantly reduced energy usage and cost and spurring significant renewable energy investments and the development of a climate resilience plan for the region. In 2022, Dr. Alibaši膰 served as a Fulbright Project Specialist in the Republic of Kosovo's Prime Minister Office of Strategic Planning, where he completed the project of National Development Strategy and National Energy Strategy alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Dr. Alibaši膰 has over 17 years of experience teaching graduate and undergraduate in public policy, public administration, economic development, and sustainability courses at Grand Valley State University, Central Michigan University, and Davenport University. As an associate professor at UWF, he teaches doctoral and graduate-level in public service and administrative ethics, the political economy, strategic management, leadership, public budgeting and finance, and public administration. During his tenure at the University of West Florida, Dr. Alibaši膰 presented at regional, national, and international conferences on a wide range of topics, including governance, climate resilience, strategic planning, sustainability and administration, post-genocide resilience and development, and was quoted in regional, state, national, and international media on these topics. As a Fulbright Project Specialist, in 2022, Dr. Alibaši膰 completed a project for the Republic of Kosovo's Prime Minister's Office of Strategic Planning in coordination with the European Union Ministry of Integration and the U.S. Department of State, which included the following specific project activities: - A full review and suggested refinements to the National Development Strategy 2030 (NDS 2030), including specific suggestions for messaging, editorial changes, and alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including writing the English version of the vision for the NDS 2030. - Writing the Green Agenda proposal draft to be included in the NDS 2030 and to align with the SDGs. - Reviewing and recommending modifications to the National Strategic Management Framework, namely the placement of the environmental goals in the NDS 2030. - Examining and suggesting revisions to the National Energy Strategy, including suggestions for aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), peak load management, and cybersecurity threat information. - Reviewing the Administrative Burden Reduction documents and offering comments and suggestions for additional considerations. - Meeting with the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and the Minister of the Local Government Affairs. - At the invitation of the Director of the Office of Strategic Planning, attending the Joint Steering Committee chaired by the Prime Minister, with several ministers, and representatives of the international community, including the UN in Kosovo and the World Health Organization. In addition, Dr. Alibaši膰 is a partner in the Florida League of Cities Municipal Research Program. Through the Partners in Municipal Research Program, the Center for Municipal Research & Innovation serves as a link between Florida's public policy researchers and municipal governments, bridging the gap between academics and public policymakers and administrators. For the past two years, he led the UWF interdisciplinary team of undergraduate and graduate students to the statewide Municipal Modernization competition organized by the Florida League of Cities and held in Orlando, FL. He presented at the FLC symposium on climate resilience and hosted a webinar on climate resilience and sustainability planning. In March 2017, Dr. Alibaši膰 was appointed by the City Council to the City of Pensacola Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Task Force at the recommendation of local community members and an elected official. On November 8, 2018, Dr. Alibaši膰 presented the Task Force's final recommendations to the City of Pensacola Council. In December 2018, he was interviewed for a WUWF radio segment on climate change in the region and discussed the Task Force climate resilience report. In 2013, Dr. Alibaši膰 advised the Resilient Communities of America on climate resilience and went on to serve as co-chair for the energy sector of the White House Climate Preparedness and Resilience Task Force in 2014. Dr. Alibaši膰 received the 2012 West Michigan Environmental Action Council (WMEAC) – The C.R. Evenson Award, and the 2011 Grand Valley State University's Sustainability Champion Award. In November of 2016, he won the prestigious Sustainable Hall of Fame Merit Award from West Michigan Sustainable Business Forum. In January 2017, he received an Emerging Scholar Award at Thirteenth International Conference on Environmental, Cultural, Economic, and Social Sustainability and the On Sustainability Research Network, held in Rio, Brazil. He also received a 2017 Great Lakes-Saint Lawrence Cities Initiative (GLSLCI) Certificate of Appreciation and November 28th of 2016 State of Michigan Special Tribute.
