Building on its support of our region’s future dentists, the GECU Foundation has announced another generous contribution of $325,000 for Hunt School of Dental Medicine scholarships and the dental patient fund. That increases its total commitment to Texas Tech Health El Paso in 2025 to $425,000, including a $100,000 gift made during the Hunt School of Nursing’s White Coat Ceremony in January, aimed at creating four full-tuition scholarships for nursing students.

Alzheimer’s disease is the leading cause of dementia, affecting approximately 6.7 million people in the United States over the age of 65, according to the Centers for Disease Control. El Paso County, where 83% of the population identifies as Hispanic, ranks 10th among U.S. counties with populations over 10,000 for Alzheimer’s prevalence, according to recent Alzheimer’s Association research. Despite these alarming statistics, there is currently no noninvasive, early detection method for Alzheimer’s disease.

By growing our own health care heroes, the Hunt School of Nursing is addressing the critical nursing shortage and tackling the unique health challenges of the U.S.-Mexico border region. Since its establishment, the school has graduated more than 1,500 nurses, with 90% remaining in the area to practice.
